Parametric Wire Coil _ Toy Story Land (Case Study)

A test to see how to generate the coil show piece seen in the final scene of the Slinky Dog Dash roller coaster at Toy Story Land in Disney Hollywood Studios. The mic coil drops from Mr. Spell and hangs below the coaster. The coil then rises back up into the microphone in the hand of Wheezy, as he sings you a Toy Story classic as you wait to unload in the load unload platform.

I used Rhino 3D V6 to generate the model. Through use of grasshopper I was able to make a parametric model for the coil, allowing me to adjust the radius, gauge, and path of the curve. After generating a static model I ran the form though Kangaroo, a physics simulator that allowed me replicate gravity on the coil. Using a few anchor points I was able to get an accurate sag of the coil as if it was dealing under the coaster.
